Greetings Students and Families,
On behalf of VCOE and Buena High School faculty and staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year. We are pleased that you have taken the time to visit our web site. We hope that you find our website to be user-friendly, and after your visit, you will have a good idea of what we have to offer.
My name is Karla Curry, and I serve as the Special Education Principal for West County VCOE Special Education Programs at Dorothy Boswell School, Balboa Middle School, Buena High School, Ojai TEAMS, and Ventura High School. I am extremely proud thankful to be working with such an exceptional group of students, families, and staff members.
I have spent the last seven years as a school administrator. In addition, I was primary, secondary, and post-secondary special education teacher for students with moderate to severe disabilities for 12 years. I received my undergraduate degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, a Special Education Teaching Credential (Moderate/Severe Disabilities) from San Diego State University, and a Master's Degree in Special Education (Moderate/Severe Disabilities) from California State University at Northridge. I completed my Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2012 with an emphasis on special education leadership. As an individual who values continual, life-long learning and a leader who encourages and supports higher learning, I also serve adult learners as an adjunct professor of Educational Leadership for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Ventura County Office of Education operates two Special Day Classes located on the Buena High School Campus in Ventura. These classrooms accommodate students 14 - 18 years of age / grades 9th-12th. Academics, based upon State Standards, are taught within several domains so students learn functional skills that maximize their independence in the future. The VCOE Special Education Programs at Buena High School cherish the opportunity to help cultivate each student’s gifts and talents with an emphasis on secondary instruction related to independent living, career and vocational training, community access, recreation and leisure, mobility and motor skills, social-emotional needs, and functional academics. As a learning community, we believe that professional expertise supported by collaboration; between teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals, administration, students, and parents/guardians; and professional development leads to positive student outcomes.
We thank you for visiting our website and hopefully you have gained additional insight about our school. My door is always open and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and ideas. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or ideas about how to make the website work better for you. Additionally, individualized tours are available throughout the school year.
