The winners of the first-ever VEX Robotics competition hosted by the Ventura County Office of Education have been announced. The "Nothing but Net" competition held Saturday in Camarillo featured robots built by middle and high school students from throughout Central and Southern California. The winners are:

• James Monroe High School in North Hills
• Grace Brethren Junior High and High Schools in Simi Valley
Excellence Award – Harvard-Westlake School in Studio City
Design Award - Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita
Judges Award - Triton Academy in Camarillo
Sportsmanship Award - Grace Brethren Junior High and High Schools in Simi Valley

About the VEX Robotics Competition at VCOE
Ventura County schools and students have long been ready for a local robotics event. Realizing this, public and private Ventura County middle and high schools were provided a unique opportunity to bring robotics education programs to their students with no up-front equipment costs. Last November, VCOE and the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation provided VEX Robotics Classroom and Competition Super Kit grants to the first 30 eligible schools to respond.
The kits offer students an exciting platform for learning about areas rich with career opportunities that span science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Beyond science and engineering principles, the projects encourage teamwork, leadership and problem solving among groups. They can also be easily customized to meet the students' skill level.
Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, have built innovative robots designed to score the most points possible in qualification matches, elimination matches and skills challenges. In addition to having a great time and building amazing robots, through their participation in the competition and their work within their team, students will learn many academic and life skills.
