 Dr. Valerie Chrisman, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services

The Educational Services Branch provides a broad array of training, support and resources for professional educators, staff and officials throughout the county. This branch is uniquely situated to link districts with State legal requirements and educational goals, identify emerging educational needs, and develop and disseminate sound and responsive educational practices and programs.

Dr. Valerie Chrisman was made Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services in November 2011.  She has been with the Ventura County Office of Education since 2001.  Previously, she was involved in education at the elementary, middle, high school levels. She was the principal of an elementary school that became a National Title I Distinguished School.  Dr. Chrisman's expertise and leadership has been a huge asset to the educators she has worked with in Ventura County's schools and districts to help improve student achievement.  She represents Ventura County at the state-wide Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee where she is the chair for the Accountability Committee and a member of the Executive Committee.  In Ventura County she chairs the monthly Curriculum Council meetings for district educational leaders.

Dr. Chrisman assists districts and schools by facilitating Local Educational Agency Plan revisions, follow-up support and monitoring for districts and schools, support for state and federal compliance issues and professional development on building collaborative teacher teams.  She is a DAIT Lead and serves on all CIS achievement analysis teams.  Dr. Chrisman's work is published in Educational Leadership and her research on sustaining school improvement won the American Educational Research Association Dissertation of the Year in 2004. She recently co-authored the California Department of Education's A District and School Implementation and Technical Assistance Guide for Response to Instruction and Intervention that can be found at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/cr/ri/.

Categorical Projects
This department provides NCLB and testing support to school districts through timely notifications, state and federal updates, and technical assistance. Research and Evaluation services also provide statistical and data analysis and program evaluations.

The Curriculum and Instruction Department is recognized for its ability to develop successful partnerships with local school districts to provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs.

Leadership Support Services
This department provides important, relevant, research-based professional development for school and district administrators and school-based learning teams. This includes VIP, T4S and AB 430 Administrator training. County SARB meetings and the Continuation & Alternative Education Principals' Network are also coordinated through this department.
