"THE MAGIC OF MUSIC"
His work has been heard on numerous recordings and television shows over the past quarter century. Jon Crosse has been a sax and woodwind soloist and arranger for Paul Anka since 1983. He began teaching elementary instrumental music upon graduation from Ohio State in 1968, and he taught Jazz Improvisations at many institutions, including UCLA and CSULA. He produced two award-winning children's recordings, "Lullabies Go Jazz" and "Peter and the Wolf Play Jazz". Jon hopes to generate interest in playing the recorder in the early grades to plant seeds of a new generation of instrumentalists. For students in the upper grades already playing an instrument, he shares his expertise in jazz, the work of jazz masters, and the art of improvisation.
In the recorder classes (grades 2-6) students will be provided with recorders and study materials selected to teach fundamentals of music reading, as well as work on playing "by ear." In Jazz Appreciation and Improvisation (grades 6-8), young musicians will learn basic skills involved in creating an improvised solo, and will listen to and study transcriptions of recordings of artists like Miles Davis, Bill Evans and Charlie Parker. Throughout his residency, Jon will demonstrate various instruments, bringing music to life in the minds of the students,
