The Kindergarten Readiness Act, signed into law in 2010, represents historic reform to education that will provide an unparalleled opportunity for our youngest learners. SB1381 creates transitional kindergarten, the first year of a two year kindergarten experience for those students born between September and December. Transitional kindergarten (TK) utilizes a modified kindergarten curriculum taught by a credentialed teacher. Designed to provide an opportunity for the youngest five-year-olds to be successful in school, it serves as a bridge between preschool and traditional kindergarten.
Pursuant to law EC 48000[c], a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if his or her fifth birthday occurs according to the following schedule:
For the school year: Birthday falls between:
2012-2013 November 2 and December 2
2013-2014 October 2 and December 2
2014-2015 (and each year thereafter) September 2 and December 2
