General Session presented by Wayne Sakamoto, San Diego County Office of Education, Safe Schools Lead Coordinator
"Understanding Youth At-Risk"
This general session will examine current research on risk factors that contribute to violence, gangs, drug use and future incarceration. To impact current juvenile crime educators, law enforcement, probation, mental health staff and youth service workers must have a clear understanding of factors that contribute to anti-social behaviors. This session will not only provide for a clinical examination of risk factors, but the presenter will bring the research to life through examples and real life experiences. This "gut level" understanding of risk factors will allow participants to better understand youth in risk and, ultimately, to better approaches to assist youth, families and communities. Program implications will be addressed through an examination of current efforts such as risk reduction, asset-based approaches, youth development and developmental trajectory intervention.
