The Ventura County Academic Decathlon is a unique opportunity for high school students in Ventura County to compete against like teams of students countywide. The top Ventura County team participates in the statewide Academic Decathlon competition. A California team then participates in the United States Academic Decathlon which is the premier scholastic competition for students in America from both public and private high schools. The Academic Decathlon consists of ten academic events.
A particularly unique aspect of this ten-event scholastic competition is that it is designed to include students from all academic backgrounds. A team consists of nine full-time students from the 9th through 12th grades of the same high school. Each nine-member team is comprised of three students whose grade point average falls into the “A” category, three students in the “B” category and three students in the “C” category.
The mission of the United States Academic Decathlon is to: Promote and recognize learning and achievement by emphasizing the value of academic excellence for all students.
Academic Decathlon Participants
Each year approximately 200 Ventura County students, in grades 9-12, actively experience the excitement of working in teams, exchanging ideas, setting goals, and examining issues while interacting with positive role models from their communities.
The winning county team is then invited to the State Academic Decathlon to compete with their peers from across California where many of our past teams have then gone on to place 1st or 2nd in the USAD National Championship.
Academic Decathlon Judges
Approximately 75 business and education professionals from throughout Ventura County volunteer their time to serve as judges for the County Schools Federal Credit Union Academic Decathlon.
Academic Decathlon Tradition
The Ventura County Office of Education inaugurated the first Ventura County Academic Decathlon in 1982 and has continued to coordinate this competition on an annual basis. Ventura county teams have enjoyed tremendous success in the Academic Decathlon. The team from Moorpark High School won the county, state and national competitions in the 1998-1999 competition. Simi Valley High School won the county and state competitions, and place second in the national finals the following year. Moorpark High School earned second place in the 2001 State Finals. The following year in 2001-2002 Moorpark High School won the Ventura County competition, the California State Finals, and they placed second overall at the USAD National Championship. In school year 2002-2003, Moorpark High School won the county, state and national championships! Simi Valley High School won the 2004 county competition and placed fifth (out of 50 teams) in the state finals.
In 2007 Moorpark High School took 1st place at the county level, 3rd place at the state level and is the first team in history to score 100% on the Super Quiz at state. Oxnard High School placed 2nd at county and scored so high that they were invited to compete at state where they placed 12th in California.
