 Training and Education for the Achievement of Children (TEACh)
Introduction to Scholarship Application - 2007

MISSION

The mission of  TEACh is to motivate and financially assist current and former foster youth in obtaining the education or training that will prepare them to be contributing members of the community.

BACKGROUND

Each spring scholarships are awarded to selected, qualified applicants. All applications are reviewed by a screening committee to determine the number and amount of individual scholarships.

Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, student fees, books and supplies for college (including community college), university, trade/technical school, art school or alternative education programs. Scholarship funds are deposited into an account in the recipient’s name at the selected school/college of choice.

ELIGIBILITY

TEACh scholarships are for teens and young adults who:

  • Are or have been in foster care or a group home, and who are approaching emancipation, and who will complete high school/GED by the summer of 2007.

                or

  • Are under the age of 25 and were in out-of-home care (foster care or group home) as a minor, and have completed high school/GED.

You can apply for a TEACh scholarship even if you have received one in the past or applied and were denied. If you have received a TEACh scholarship in the past, you do not need to get new letters of reference, but please include copies of these letters from your previous application.

A variety of scholarships are available through the TEACh Fund. Depending upon your stated educational and career goals, and based upon your “status” in the foster youth program, you may also be eligible for one of these “dedicated” scholarships, for example:

§ Current foster youth who are court dependent through Children & Family Services and who are planning to attend College may be eligible for a computer scholarship sponsored by the Ventura County Children's Services Auxiliary.

§ Foster youth who plan to pursue vocational training may be eligible for a scholarship sponsored by the Altrusa Club.

The screening committee will determine which scholarship is appropriate based upon the information contained in the individual applications.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Before you fill out your application, think about your responses to the following as they will be considered by the screening committee in making the award decisions:

1. Barriers or circumstances you have overcome that demonstrate your desire to succeed;

2. Need for financial assistance;

3. Academic achievement;

4. Personal goals and your plans for achieving them:

5. Employment history;

6. Volunteer work, community service, and/or school involvement;

7. Recommendations by your social worker, teachers, school counselors, employers or others who would know you best.

If you have questions or need assistance, contact your social worker, school counselor, or independent living support person (contact Mo Mosely at 498-8068, ext. 222). A Workshop to assist with this application will be held at Ventura College in January (contact Rhonda Carlson at 654-6327).
