Distinguished School award given to 11 local campuses

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced 484 exemplary California public elementary schools were selected as 2010 California Distinguished Schools.

 

Congratulations to the following 11 Ventura County schools!

 

-     Olivelands Elementary School, Briggs Elementary School District

-     Brookside Elementary School, Oak Park Unified School District

-     Santa Rosa Technology Magnet School, Pleasant Valley School District

-     Grace S. Thille Elementary School, Santa Paula Elementary School District

-     Thelma B. Bedell Elementary School, Santa Paula Elementary School District

-     Arroyo Elementary School, Simi Valley Unified School District

-     Crestview Elementary School, Simi Valley Unified School District

-     Santa Susana Elementary School, Simi Valley Unified School District

-     Elmhurst Elementary School, Ventura Unified School District

-     Poinsettia Elementary School, Ventura Unified School District

Model Middle Grades Schools Named - Congrats Medea Middle School!

February 26, 2010

 

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today designated six California schools as model middle grades schools in the Schools to Watch™–Taking Center Stage (STW™–TCS) program.

 

"Middle school can be a difficult time for students as they mature socially, physically, and academically. These six model middle grades schools are making great progress in improving academic achievement, meeting the needs of their students, and making changes that are leading to further student success," said O’Connell. "All the hard work of the students, their parents, teachers, and administrators are paying off and I congratulate them all and hope that other middle schools can learn from their successful practices."

 

The new model middle grades schools in the Schools to Watch™–Taking Center Stage program schools are:

 

·       Canyon Middle School (Castro Valley Unified School District, Castro Valley, Alameda County);

·       Edna Hill Middle School (Brentwood Union School District, Brentwood, Contra Costa County);

·       Frank M. Wright Middle School (Imperial Unified School District, Imperial, Imperial County);

·       John Glenn Middle School (Desert Sands Unified School District, Indio, Riverside County);

·       Medea Creek Middle School (Oak Park Unified School District, Oak Park, Ventura County);

·       Oliver Wendell Holmes Middle School (Los Angeles Unified School District, Northridge, Los Angeles County).

Title I Academic Achievement Awards for 2010

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell today announced that 238 California schools have been selected for the 2009-10 Title I Academic Achievement Award. The list of recipients is attached.

 

"These award recipients prove that with hard work and high expectations, students can overcome challenges and achieve academic success," said O'Connell. "By working together, administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents have raised student achievement and narrowed the achievement gap. I congratulate these schools and everyone who worked hard to make them deserving of this significant award."

 

The Title I Academic Achievement Award is given only to schools receiving federal TitleI funds as authorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Title I is the single largest federal educational program for K-12 public education. Title I funds assist schools in meeting the educational needs of students living near or at the poverty level. Of the more than 9,000 schools in California, more than 6,000 of them participate in the Title I program.
