  Designated Subjects Career Tech Ed (CTE) Credential  

The Preliminary or Clear Designated Subjects Career Technical Education Credential (DSC CTE) authorizes the holder to teach in the subject(s) named on the credential in grades 12 and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, in career technical instruction (vocational) courses.
 
The DSC CTE Credential is a two-tiered credential: individuals first qualify for the initial credential called a "preliminary" based mainly on their actual work experience in the industry sector. Once the individual has obtained the preliminary credential, they must complete additional requirements to earn the final credential called a "clear". A clear credential is valid for five years and is renewable online through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing's (CTC) website.

There are 15 broad CTE subject areas (called "industry sectors")  that can be listed on a credential:

  • Agriculture and Natural Resources - authorizes classes in agriculture business management and marketing; agriculture mechanic; animal care; animal control; animal production; crop production; floriculture and floristry; forestry, natural resources and rural recreation; landscaping; ornamental nursery operation 
  • Arts, Media, and Entertainment - authorizes classes in commercial art; commercial photography; journalism occupations; multimedia production; performing arts occupations; stage technology; theatrical occupations 
  • Building Trades and Construction - authorizes classes in boat building; carpentry; concrete placing and finishing; construction equipment operation; construction inspection; drafting occupations; drywall installation; electrician work; fire sprinkler installation; floor covering installation; foundry work; furniture making, finishing and refinishing; general contracting; glazing; hazardous materials work; heating, air conditioning, and ventilation installation and service; lathing; masonry; millwork and cabinet making; painting-construction; pipefitting and steam fitting; plastering; plumbing; refrigeration installation and maintenance; residential and commerical repair and remodeling; roofing; sheet metal fabrication; structural and reinforcement ironwork; structural pest control; tile setting; upholstering; welding 
  • Education, Child Development, and Family Services - authorizes classes in child care; elderly care services (non-medical); family and human service occupations; interpreter for the deaf; teaching/teacher aide
  • Energy and Utilities - authorizes classes in control system maintenance and repair; electrical power distribution; electrician work; electronic consumer products service work; electronics assembly; energy, environment, and resource management; hybrid microelectronics; hydroelectric plant operations; industrial electronics; marine power plant maintenance and repair; robotics; water treatment
  • Engineering and Design - authorizes classes in drafting occupations; engineering occupations; robotics; surveying
  • Fashion and Interior Design - authorizes classes in clothing; alteration and repair; fabric maintenance services; fashion design; fashion manufacturing (factory and custom); fashion merchandising; interior design; jewelry design, fabrication and repair; textile design; textile production and fabrication; upholstering
  • Finance and Business - authorizes classes in accounting occupations; banking; business management; financial management and services; income tax preparation; insurance occupations; legal office occupations; office occupations; personnel administration occupations; secretarial/stenography occupations; small business ownership and/or management
  • Health Science and Medical Technology - authorizes classes in athletic trainer occupations; biomedical equipment technology; dental services; health care biotechnology services; health care diagnostic servcies; health care information services; health care preventive services; health care supportive services; medical office services; nursing services; optical goods work; therapeutic services
  • Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation - authorizes classes in amusement and theme park occupations; commercial diving; custodial services; customer service representative occupations; dietetics and nutrition service; event and conference planning; food and beverage production and preparation; food and beverage services; hotel and lodging occupations; interior maintenance (residential and commercial); pool and spa service; recreation
  • Information Technology - authorizes classes in communications electronics; computer applications; computer electronics; computer maintenance and repair; computer programming; computer software operation; computer systems operation; information processing; information systems management; telecommunications
  • Manufacturing and Product Development - authorizes classes in computer-assisted manufacturing; drafting occupations; electronic publishing; industrial ceramics manufacturing; instrument repair; machine tool operation and machine shop occupations; major appliance repair; metal fabrication; office machine repair; plastics and composites manufacturing occupations; printing and graphics occupations; product development; testing and demonstration; robotics; small appliance repair; technical illustration; tool and die making; waterfront manufacturing
  • Marketing, Sales and Service - authorizes classes in international trade; marketing; real estate; retail occupations; small business ownership and/or management
  • Public Service - authorizes classes in barbering; cosmetology; court reporting; fire control and safety; fire fighting; law enforcement occupations; legal office occupations; locksmith and safe repair; manicures and pedicures; motor sweeper operator; protective and security services; shoe repair
  • Transportation - authorizes classes in airframe and power plant mechanics; automobile detailing; automotive body repair and refinishing; automotive brake installation and repair; automotive electrical systems service and repair; automotive heating and air-conditioning service; automotive mechanics; automotive parts counterperson; automotive suspension and steering repair; automotive transmission and transaxle service and repair; avionics; bicycle repair; diesel equipment mechanics; electric motor repair; engine performance technician; heavy equipment maintenance and repair; industrial maintenance; motorcycle service and repair; railroad operations; small engine service and repair; tow truck operation; transportation occupations; travel services; truck and bus driving; warehousing

  Requirements for Preliminary DSC CTE Credential (Full-Time)  
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is highly advisable that you consult with one of our academic advisors to determine your specific requirements for the preliminary credential based on your specific background, education and circumstances. Please call our office at (805) 437-1320 to speak with an advisor or to make an advisement appointment.
  1. Application for Credential: Please complete Sections 1, 3 (attach any supporting documentation/explanation for any question you answer “yes”) and sign/date under Oath and Affidavit on the last page.
  2. Request for Live Scan (fingerprints) Service: Contact your local school district or police station and check to see if they do live scan fingerprints for applying for a teaching credential. Please note: A fee will be required.
  3. Work experience: Letter(s) verifying three years of full-time (or 3000 hours over 3 or more years) work experience in the subject area (please note that teaching experience does not meet this requirement). Letters should be on letterhead and verify that the individual was/is employed with the employer; state beginning and ending dates of employment; whether the job was full-time or part-time (if part-time, must give accounting of hours); complete description of job duties; signed by employer (include job title of person signing and contact information).   4. Recent experience: Letter(s) verifying one year full-time (or 1000 hours) experience within the last five (5) years or two years within the last ten (10) years. Work or teaching experience can be used to meet this requirement.
  5. Copy of High School diploma or official transcript (official transcript of AA or BA degree also OK); 
  6. Money order or cashier’s check for $55.00 made payable to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (or CTC) for the credential application fee.
  7. Check for $75.00 payable to the Ventura County Office of Education (or VCOE) for our advisement/processing/recommendation fees. This one-time fee also covers the application fee to the Ventura County DSC Level I and Level II Program.

  Requirements for Clear DSC CTE Credential (Full-Time)  
IMPORTANT NOTE: It is highly advisable that you consult with one of our academic advisors to determine your specific requirements for the preliminary credential based on your specific background, education and circumstances. Please call our office at (805) 437-1320 to speak with an advisor or to make an advisement appointment.

  1. Possess a Preliminary DSC CTE Credential and obtain written verification from your employing school district (ESD) that you taught at least four terms on the preliminary credential (a minimum of one course in each of four terms within the five-year period of validity of your preliminary credential. Two of these terms must be with one ESD.) Please have your school district complete their own letter (on district letterhead) or a Verification of Experience form.
  2. Verification of completion of a Commission-approved DSC CTE program of personalized preparation that includes training in Specially Designed Academic Instruction Delivered in English (SDAIE). 
  3. Proof of meeting US Constitution requirement by either college coursework or exam (official transcript or exam results).  If you have a bachelor’s degree issued from a California State University (CSU), this will also meet this requirement. If you need to meet this requirement, there are several exam options available:  
    2. California Lutheran University US Constitition class/exam
    3. Notre Dame De Namur Online US Constitution exam
    4. Cuesta College American Constitution test (San Luis Obispo County)
  4. Health Education which includes nutrition and substance abuse.
  5. If you need to meet this requirement, we usually offer a 1-day Saturday Health course each school year. To register, please download the DSC Adult Ed Registration brochure located under the "Links and Forms" section on the Ventura COE DSC Program Home Page.
    1. If you already completed the Ventura COE Health course, you must request a transcript from California Lutheran University's website.

  6. Copy of front and back of CPR card/certificate covering Adult, Child and Infant (or Adult/Pediatric) certification (same standards as American Red Cross or American Heart Association.

    1. The Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) will accept online CPR training through www.cprtoday.com toward credential requirements. Please note that online CPR training is generally not acceptable if needed for school employment purposes.

  7. Application for Credential: Please complete Sections 1, 3 (attach any supporting documentation/explanation for any question you answer “yes”) and sign/date under Oath and Affidavit on the last page.

  8. Money order or cashier’s check for $55.00 made payable to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (or CTC) for the credential application fee.
