The Preliminary or Clear Designated Subjects Adult Education Credential (DSC AE) authorizes the holder to teach in the subject(s) named on the credential in classes organized primarily for adults.

The DSC AE Credential is a two-tiered credential: individuals first qualify for the initial credential called a "preliminary" based mainly on their actual work experience and/or educational background in the subject(s). Once the individual has obtained the preliminary credential, they must complete additional requirements to earn the final credential called a "clear". A clear credential is valid for five years and is renewable online through the Commission on Teacher Credentialing's (CTC) website.

There are "General Subjects: Personal Development," "General Subjects: Career Technical Education" and "Academic" subjects that can be listed on a credential. For additional information regarding credential subjects, refer to the CTC's DSC Adult Ed Informational Leaflet.
