California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS)

The California School Climate, Health, and Learning Services (CalSCHLS) are supported by the California Department of Education to help Ventura County school districts meet priorities to improve school climate, pupil engagement, parent involvement, and academic achievement.  The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors, and risk behaviors in the nation. CHKS has led to a better understanding of the relationship between students' health behaviors and academic performance. It is recognized by policy makers as a critical component of school improvement efforts to help guide the development of more effective health, prevention, and youth development programs.

The CHKS, along with its partner surveys, the California School Staff Survey and the California School Parent Survey, is highlighted as a model program in a research document released by the US Department of Education.

The CHKS is conducted every two years to gauge the emotional and physical well-being of students throughout the state and in Ventura County. The results are used to combat substance abuse and bullying, improve school safety, and reduced the achievement gap.
