The Ventura County Office of Education operates two Special Day Classrooms on the Conejo Elementary Campus serving students ages 5-10 with moderate to severe disabilities.
There is a primary and upper elementary class.
The curriculum is comprised of the following domains:
- domestic
- vocational
- recreation / leisure
- community access / motor skills
- communication
- social-emotional and
- functional academics
Academics are Standards based and taught within these domains so students learn functional skills that maximize their independence. A functional mobility component to the curriculum is available for students with physical disabilities to develop skills of sitting, standing, and walking while participating in their school activities.
Occupational and physical therapists from the Conejo Medical Therapy Unit provide support to this aspect of the curriculum. All activities are designed to increase independence and communication, Opportunities for interaction with typical peers are available assemblies, lunch, physical education, integration into typical classrooms, and with peer tutors who work in the classroom.
