Academic Decathlon

Must be enrolled in a Ventura County school or a school located within the boundaries of a Ventura County school district.

Ventura County Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon is designed to provide a forum for celebrating and acknowledging scholastic achievement and academic excellence in the context of a team environment. The Academic Decathlon provides a unique opportunity for high school students to challenge themselves academically while developing teamwork, communication, and critical thinking skills. Each year, over 250 Ventura County students in grades 9–12 participate in the Ventura County Academic Decathlon. Through this engaging academic competition, students experience the excitement of working collaboratively as a team, setting goals, and exploring complex topics while interacting with positive role models from their communities.The Academic Decathlon consists of ten events designed to assess students' knowledge and skills across a variety of disciplines. Students compete individually and as members of their school team in objective tests, speech, interview, essay, and the Super Quiz.

The winning Ventura County team advances to the California Academic Decathlon, where students compete against top teams from across the state. The California champion then represents the state at the United States Academic Decathlon, the nation's premier scholastic competition for students from both public and private high schools. Ventura County teams have a strong tradition of success, with several advancing to the national level and earning first- and second-place finishes in national competition. A distinctive feature of the Academic Decathlon is its commitment to inclusivity. Teams are intentionally composed of students from a range of academic achievement levels. Each team consists of nine full-time students from grades 9–12 representing the same high school and includes students competing in the Honor (GPA 3.85–4.00), Scholastic (GPA 3.50–3.8499), and Varsity (GPA 0.00–3.499) divisions. Students compete against peers within their respective divisions, creating an equitable and rewarding experience for all participants.

Competition Events

The Academic Decathlon features ten individual events and a Team Super Quiz that challenge students' knowledge, communication skills, and teamwork.

Speech

Each decathlete will deliver both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech before a panel of two to three speech judges. For the prepared speech, students will give a 3½ to 4 minute presentation on a topic of their choice, assessing delivery, content, structure, and stance. The impromptu speech follows, during which students are given an unannounced prompt and must quickly organize their ideas into a 1½ to 2 minute presentation.

Interview

During interviews, students participate in a structured, face-to-face conversation with a panel of two to three judges. Students have seven minutes to answer questions about their background, interests, and future goals.

Essay

The Essay event challenges students to showcase their critical thinking, research, and writing skills. Given a choice of prompts related to the annual competition theme, competitors analyze complex ideas, develop a clear argument, and compose a persuasive response within a timed window.

The Seven Objective Exams

The core curriculum consists of seven multiple-choice examinations: Art, Music, Social Science, Science, Economics, Literature, and Mathematics. These exams are carefully constructed to assess a student’s in-depth understanding and retention of the annual theme.

Super Quiz

During this fast-paced, team-based event, teammates take turns solving tough multiple-choice questions live in front of an audience. Designed in the spirit of fun and sportsmanship, the Super Quiz tests multidisciplinary knowledge without impacting overall team scores.
