What is the Menstrual Equity for All Act?
The Menstrual Equity for All Act (AB#^&) recognizes the critical need for expanded access to free menstrual products to California public schools to stem the harmful impacts period poverty has on students in the classroom.
Two Major Legal Requirements for local education agencies:
- Stock Restrooms - beginning 2022-23 school year, all public schools including schools operated by school districts, county office of education, and charter schools, serving any grade 6-12 must provide free and accessible menstrual products in all women's restrooms and all-gender restrooms and at least one men's restroom. Schools serving any grade 3-5 must also comply with the act by the beginning of 2024-25 school year.
- Notify Students - Schools must post clear and visible notices letting students know about their right to access free menstrual products. The notice must be posted in all applicable restrooms and include the text of Education Code 35252.6, plus contact information, including telephone number and email address, for the school personnel responsible for ensuring menstrual products are stocked.
