Ventura County's Mock Trial Program

Since 1983, the Ventura County Office of Education (VCOE) has partnered with Teach Democracy, formerly known as the Constitutional Rights Foundation, to provide Mock Trial opportunities for Ventura County students. Each year, approximately 650 middle and high school students from across Ventura County participate in Mock Trial. Working in teams, students exchange ideas, set goals, examine important issues, and develop valuable skills while learning from positive role models and volunteer legal professionals in their communities. In 2022, VCOE expanded the program to include a Middle School Mock Trial competition, giving even more students the opportunity to experience the legal system firsthand.

Mock Trial is designed to help students understand how our legal system works through hands-on experience. Students take on the roles of courtroom participants, including attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, and bailiffs. Teams study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research, prepare their arguments, and receive guidance from volunteer attorneys as they develop and present their case before volunteer judges.

The competition simulates a trial-level court proceeding, with student teams presenting their cases before a presiding judge and scoring judges. Students are evaluated on their legal arguments, courtroom presentations, and ability to effectively portray their assigned roles.

The experience extends beyond the courtroom. Mock Trial gives students the opportunity to strengthen their critical thinking, communication, collaboration, research, and public speaking skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the judicial system.

The winning Ventura County high school team is invited to represent the county at the California State Mock Trial competition, where they compete against teams from throughout the state. Over the years, Ventura County teams have achieved tremendous success at the state level, with many advancing to compete at the national level.
