In January of 2016, the U.S. Department of Education granted states flexibility regarding federal Supplemental Educational Services (SES) requirements. California has elected that Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) not be required to provided SES for the 2016-2017 school year.
For this school year, LEAs must provide alternative supports; these supports must be included in the LCAP and be consistent and aligned with local priorities.
Alternative supports include, but are not limited to, any of the following:
Academic support offered during school hours, before school, after school, intercession, and/or during summer learning programs.
Small group instruction and/or pull out interventions offered during the regular school day.
Interventions offered during After School Education and Safety or 21st Century Community Learning Center programs.
High quality academic tutoring (1 2 3 Success / VCOE
, an approved SES provider, is still available to those districts interested in providing intervention after school tutoring)
Purchasing supplemental materials to support alternative support services.
Personnel costs of a crisis, intervention, and/or academic counselor to meet with eligible students.
Services and programs that remove barriers to promote academic achievement of eligible students.
