The Ventura County Office of Education operates Carl Dwire school serving students in Prescool to Kindergarten to 8th grade.

Instruction is based upon seven curricular domains:

domestic
vocational
recreation / leisure
community access / motor skills
communication
social-emotional and
functional academics

Academics, which are California standards-based, are addressed within these domains so that students learn functional skills that will maximize future independence.

A strong emphasis is placed on teaching the student appropriate behaviors and on improving communication skills. Instruction is designed to meet individual needs of each student throughout the school day, including recess and lunch periods.

Students are involved in Community-Based Instruction (CBI) within the nearby community. A portion of the student's school day may be spent in integrated activities with general education students. These activities could include eating in the cafeteria with a buddy class, peer tutors in the special education classroom, activities with the regular education classroom and the like. Peer tutors come from classes on the McAuliffe campus.

Additionally, a CCS Medical Therapy Unit is located in the Dwire building.
