Educational Rights of Immigrant Students
The Ventura County Office of Education is committed to promoting safe and supportive learning environments for all students, including those who are immigrants or from immigrant families. In California's public schools, the law requires that the following be upheld:

Non-Discrimination

Under state and federal law, all students, including those who are undocumented or come from immigrant families, have the right to attend public school, participate in school activities, and receive a quality education without discrimination.

Safe School Environment

Schools are prohibited from voluntarily granting access to campus by immigration enforcement officers, in the absence of a judicial warrant or court order.

Confidentiality of Information

Schools are prohibited from requesting social security numbers or inquiring about the citizenship or immigration status of students or their parents or guardians, and from sharing personal information about students or their family members for immigration-enforcement purposes unless explicitly required by law.

Protecting Students from Immigration Enforcement Activity

Students deserve to feel safe at school without having to fear the impact of immigration enforcement on their campuses. In support of this goal, the Ventura County Office of Education and the Ventura County Board of Education sent a letter to the US Department of Homeland Security requesting reinstatement of the policy that had made schools off limits for immigration enforcement.

Local law enforcement agencies generally do not get involved with immigration enforcement, which is a federal responsibility. Learn more at the links below.
