What is ROP?

The Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is a public education service that provides hands-on career preparation. ROP is designed to provide students with the technical skills required for particular jobs. Community-based internships in local businesses and industry sites are offered in many classes. Every course offers a unit on employment seeking skills, which includes the job application, resume, and interview preparation.

Who is eligible?

ROP courses are open to all high school juniors, seniors, persons 16 years of age or older, and to adults. Priority is given to high school seniors then juniors, and then adults.

What is the cost to High School students?

Ventura County ROP is a state funded educational program; therefore, there is no tuition for high school students.

What is the cost to Adults?

There is a registration fee of $25.00 per course for adults. Some courses may require an additional fee or deposit for books and other supplies or may require the purchase of books and other classroom-related materials, uniforms or coveralls, vaccinations, and/or safety equipment. Adult students exempt from the registration fee are:

· Students pursuing a high school diploma

· Students receiving CalWORKS, General Relief, Food Stamps, or SSI

· Students approved by EDD for training

Where are ROP classes located?

ROP classes meet at the ROP campus located in the area of the CamarilloAirport, local high schools, and business and industry sites. After basic classroom instruction, every attempt will be made to provide internships near the student’s home, high school, or ROP class sites.

Are you paid while in an ROP class?

Because the ROP is a career preparation program, students are not paid while enrolled in class. (Students receive high school elective credit and on-the-job experience.) However, “Cooperative” courses combine paid employment with weekly classroom instruction to give advanced training to students that have attained employment.

What is an internship?

Students in the majority of our classes will be placed with an employer for further training and supervised practical experience.  During this phase of training, students will have an opportunity to apply skills they have learned in the classroom.  Students will be exposed to the realism of the work environment in an industry related to their training.  Employers indicate that this phase of training is an essential part of preparing students for employment.  Experience has demonstrated that a student’s chance of obtaining gainful employment is greatly increased by the internship phase of the program.

 

Can you earn high school credits in an ROP class?

Upon successful completion of an ROP course, elective credit may be issued and applied toward high school graduation.

 

How do I register for an ROP class?

High School Students:   See your assigned Counselor at your high school. 

Adults:   Adult registration begins August 15^th, 7:30 a.m. for fall and begins Jan 15^th, 7:30 a.m. for spring.  (If the 15^th of August or January is a weekend or holiday, the next business day will be for registration.)

 

Registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with high school and continuing students receiving priority registration.  Priority for high school students is as follows:  Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores 16 years of age or older (Sophomores may register for ROP under special circumstances.) and adults.
