Statement from Superintendent Morales on Cesar Chavez Allegations

posted on

The allegations that have emerged regarding Cesar Chavez are horrifying and heartbreaking. These revelations are painful for our community, and most importantly, for the survivors who have come forward. I want to begin by expressing my unwavering compassion and support for them. It takes extraordinary courage to speak out, and their voices must be heard, believed, and honored.

As a father of a young daughter, this issue is profoundly personal to me. I want my child and every child to grow up in a world where abuse like this no longer occurs, where young people feel safe, respected, and protected. That responsibility rests with all of us, especially those who dedicate our careers to education and public service.

We must be clear that no legacy, no matter how impactful, outweighs the dignity and safety of individuals. At the same time, we must continue to uplift and fight for the rights of farm workers, whose struggle remains as urgent as ever. The movement was built by many, and its mission endures.

I also want to recognize Dolores Huerta for her bravery in sharing her story. I have had the privilege of knowing Ms. Huerta for many years, and I was honored to join her as a speaker at Oxnard College just last month in support of first-generation college students. To learn that she carried the weight of this violence in silence for six decades to protect the movement is devastating. She is a hero, not just for her labor leadership, but for her courage in breaking that silence.

In our schools, we are committed to creating safe environments for all students. I strongly support the federal Title IX process, which plays a critical role in preventing and addressing sexual harassment and abuse. We must continue to educate, protect, and empower students and educators to create a culture where no one endures the trauma of sexual violence, and everyone is treated with the dignity and respect that all people deserve.
