The Oxnard School District is committed to ensuring the social-emotional well-being of every student that attends our schools. For the last five years, we have been committed to implementing a robust Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program so that our staff and students are equipped to address the many challenges in a safe, nurturing and rigorous learning environment. Today, we are proud to share that our PBIS work is generating the outcomes we have anticipated.
Five schools in the Oxnard School District (K-8) have received state recognition from the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports Coalition for adopting a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students in the school to achieve social, emotional and academic success.
Rose Avenue School and Norman Brekke School received Platinum Level Recognition and Ramona School, Driffill School, and RJ Frank Middle School received the Silver Level Recognition. There are four levels of PBIS recognition: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Schools need to reach seven areas of recognition criteria to apply for the awards. The level of recognition schools receive is contingent upon the level of achievement in those areas.
PBIS and CHAMPS (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, Success) are used to create positive school environments with proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviors.
“The hard-working teams at Rose, Brekke, Ramona, Driffill, and Frank schools have been working diligently regarding the implementation of PBIS at their school sites,” said Karling Aguilera-Fort, Superintendent of the Oxnard School District. “The three schools at the Silver Level are continuing to pursue the next level of recognition during this current school year, while the two schools at the Platinum Level are committed to maintaining their top-tiered status.”
The California PBIS Coalition will recognize all five schools during their annual awards conference held in Sacramento on October 29, 2019.
