LGBTQ+

About - Diversity Collective VC

The Comprehensive Health and Prevention Programs Department provides resources, trainings, and support around physical and mental wellness honoring LGBTQ+ identities.

As part of that charge, the June 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan is commemorated by Pride month, first known as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexal, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month. “The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals have had on [local, national, and global history]” (LGBTQIA+, 2021).

In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the United States designated October as LGBT History Month. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association to include the October LGBT History Month within the list of commemorative months. Additionally, National Coming Out Day (October 11), as well as the first "March on Washington" of 1979, are commemorated in the LGBTQ community during October LGBT History Month (Proclamation, 2021).

Together we celebrate the vibrant and diverse LGBTQ+ community.
