The Preliminary or Clear Designated Subjects Career Technical Education Credential (DSC CTE) authorizes the holder to teach in the industry sector(s) named on the credential in grades 12 and below and in classes organized primarily for adults, in career technical, trade or vocational courses.
There are 15 broad CTE subject areas (called "industry sectors") that can be listed on a credential. The DSC CTE Industry Sectors chart will assist you in determining your appropriate industry sector.
The DSC CTE Credential is a two-tiered credential:
Individuals first qualify for the initial credential called a "preliminary" based mainly on their actual work experience in the industry sector and must be recommended by a CTE program sponsor approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). The preliminary credential is valid for 3 years. CLICK HERE to begin the preliminary credential application process.
Tier 2. Clear Credential:
During the 3 years of the preliminary credential, additional requirements must be completed to earn the final credential called a "clear". To satisfy the credential requirement, you must be employed in a CTE teaching position and complete a CTE program. This is an online program consisting of three courses, Fall, Spring, and Summer. Program costs are currently $2,750. There is a $150 non-refundable program registration fee due at the time of registering. Once a clear credential is earned, it includes an authorization to teach to English Learners, is valid for five years, and is renewable online through the CTC's website.
